Program Description

This certificate in global education provides students from all academic backgrounds the opportunity to explore educational systems in a global context. Students will examine both the foundations of education and human development. They will gain a solid understanding of the similarities and differences in education across culture, class and ability. Students will complete ten credits of course work exploring education in the United States and across the world. They will complete three credits working with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and take an additional nine credits exploring the role of culture, literature and technology in education.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Analyze similarities and differences in educational systems around the world.
  • Plan and implement instruction in informal educational settings.
  • Use technology as an educational tool.
  • Explore multiple perspectives in global education.

Requirements

Certificate Core

13 required credit hours

  • EDUC 2800 Foundations of Education (3 hours)聽
  • EDUC 2900 Education of Students with Exceptionalities (3 hours)
  • EDUC 2050 Introduction to Global Education (3 hours)
  • EDUC 3650 Instructional Design (3 hours)
  • EDUC 4565 Global Education Portfolio (1-3 hours)

Field Experience

3 credit hours of the following:

  • EDUC 1100 Mathematics Tutoring (1 hour)
  • EDUC 2000 Beginning Practicum (1 hour)
  • EDUC 2550 Student Literacy Corps (1 hour) (may be repeated)
  • EDUC 4620 Educational Internship (2-3 hours)

Literature and Human Development

3 credit hours of the following:

  • EDUC 2300 Child and Adolescent Development (3 hours)
  • EDUC 2180 International Children's Literature (3 hours)
  • EDUC 3190 Young Adult Literature (3 hours)

Global Perspectives

3 credit hours of the following:

  • ANSO 1060 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3 hours)
  • EDUC 4250 Economics and Geography for Global Sustainability (3 hours)聽
  • SUST 1000 Introduction to Sustainability Studies (3 hours)聽
